Conk........

Autumn ushers in mushroom popping......lots of lawn mushrooms are emerging...but conks are rather rare......
On my way to work, I spotted this beautiful conk (Ganoderma perhaps) sprouted at the base of a willow...

I knew, the underneath will be white and can be carved for fun...but I was reluctant to mutilate it...

It's pretty big, is not it?

But, it was bad that the host tree had died.....did the fungus caused it? I am not sure...how can a single conk kill the tree? Or has it? Mushrooms are after all, rot fungi...

After four months, the conk looked like this....
